The computer engineering department academic staff member (Latifa A. Dawood) participated in the conference on Iraqi Women’s Vision on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030, in Baghdad, 16 September 2019 held Under the patronage of His Excellency the Prime Minister Mr. Adel Abdul Mahdi, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in Cooperation with The Ministry of Planning (MoP).

The conference discussed the possible entry points to strengthen women empowerment and highlighted current issues including achieving gender equality, discrimination and violence against women and girls, unpaid care-work and domestic violence, assuring the participation of Iraqi women in all various life aspects such as education, political participation, health, social protection, decision-making. The above could be aquired by following scientific methodology to promote the gender equality and push up process of measuring the progress in the situation of Iraqi women.

A graduate student from the Department of Computer Engineering at the University of Technology (Zahra Alaa Baqher) has been awarded a Master of Science degree in “Modified Dijkstra Algorithm with load balanced capability for SDN”, on 08 September, 2019 at the conference hall of the Computer Engineering Department.

In her thesis, two senarios of SDN exploited data networks based on several criteria. In the first scenario, various algorithms were implemented like random load balancer (RLB) and round robin balancer (RRLB), and then weighted round robin round robin balancer (WRRLB) was used to to address the little utilization of servers and to increase the throughput ratio.

In the second scenario, a dynamic load balancing based on SDN data center network topology was proposed in adaptive model for TE. Load balancing becomes dynamic as keep the algorithm running for continuous update of the information. Dijkstra’s algorithm was used to implement the load balancing in SDN application layer for optimizing link utilization in the networks, and the floodlight controller using in the control layer.

The network was tested before and after running the load balancing algorithm. The result shows that the load balancing application increased bandwidth and reduced latency of network, in order to achieve a better result and higher performance of the network. This leads to better resources utilization as a result of using SDN.

The discussion committee consisted of four members, Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed E. Younis from the Baghdad University, College of Engineering, Computer Engineering Department as Chairman, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ammar A. AbdalKareem from the Al-Nahrain University, Information Engineering College as a member, Dr. Ahmed S. Kareem from the University of Technology – Iraq, Computer Engineering Department as a member, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Mohammed N. Abdullah from the University of Technology – Iraq, Computer Engineering Department as a member and supervisor.

The Computer Engineering Department Head (Prof. Dr. Ahmed Sabah Abdul-Ameer) awarded Admissions and Student Affairs Head (Dr. Soadad E. Younis) a trophy shield at the University of Technology on Sunday 13-10-2019 in the presence of both Deputies, Branches Heads, Department Admissions Chief, Department Rapporteur, and few academic staff members.

Due to the outstanding efforts exerted in following up the graduate card issued annually by the department. Praying to the Almighty for the continuous success, and the ability to give more for the sake of our university and beloved country.
